A bistro is a small cosy restaurant, which originates from French gastronomy. Guests come here to have a glass of red wine or a coffee and may be a snack, such a Pizza Baguette. Classic bistros are normally furnished with rattan or typical bistro furniture that reflects the French way of life. In French it is also spelled as “Bistrot”. A bistro should not be confused with a brasserie as a brasserie in general offers a greater choice of warm dishes. The actual meaning of “brasserie” is brewery. In gastronomic terms, the word brasserie originates from smaller breweries in Northern France, which also offered snacks. Whether bistro or brasserie - GO IN bistro furniture adds a hint of French flair and the typical “Laissez faire” to your restaurant. In France, it is part of the street scene, where the traditional bistro furniture normally consists of rattan and wood. GO IN bistro furniture has been designed in classic and modern forms and is suitable for different restaurant types. Bistro chairs can be used inside and outside (e.g. in a street café, garden, on the patio or veranda). If used outside it is advisable to place it underneath a canopy or awning. In case of bad weather, the chairs should not remain in the open for too long. They should be stored away or covered with tarpaulin. There are special covers for the catering industry to fulfil this purpose.

The original bistro chair is the brainchild of Thonet, which was founded in 1849. The company was the first to produce the so-called bentwood chair, making it the most successful piece of seating furniture ever. The special feature of this chair was its bent form, which was then unique. At the 1867 World Fair in Paris, Thonet was awarded a gold medal, followed by a long list of other international awards. The chair went down in history as “Vienna cafeteria chair no. 14“ and its pleasant design, practicability, durability as well as its reasonable price have ensured its appeal to this day. Long before it became almost standard, the Thonet chair was delivered as a flat pack in true “IKEA style”, which the customer assembled himself. The bentwood parts were fixed with screws and not with wood glue as it was the norm then. The chair, whose backrest was only designed as two bent wood pieces, only consisted of six components plus tens screws and two nuts. When the founder Michael Thonet died in Vienna in 1871, his company operated sales offices in Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Graz, Paris, Brussels, Rome, Naples, Barcelona, Prague, Bucharest, Odessa, Sankt Petersburg, Moscow and New York plus several furniture factories in Eastern Europe. It is alleged that by 1930 50 million bentwood chairs no. 14 had been manufactured and sold.

In the past, the frames were manufactured from unpeeled rattan wood; today for reasons of weather-resistance, aluminium is the preferred material. The table tops come in a wide range of materials such as marble, granite, glass, Werzalit ®, RESYSTA ®, aluminium and various wood types such as ash or beech veneer. A bistro table made from veneered materials is only scratch and shockproof to a certain extent. That is why these bistro tables have to be treated with care. If you want to purchase tables that are highly scratch and shockproof, and if you prefer a wood effect, HPL composite panels with wood decors or laminates are to be recommended. A bistro table with marble top should be treated with a stone care product about every three months, to prevent stains from settling in. This ensures that the bistro table retains its natural marble shine. Marble care products also prevent scratches and refresh dull surfaces.
Food, liquids and other dirt should be wiped off as quickly as possible with a wet cloth to prevent them from penetrating the marble. Many of these care products are also suitable for table tops from granite, Werzalit ®, etc. To avoid break lines, bistro table tops from marble are not screwed in, but based and glued onto a strong wood plate to improve stability and avoid breakage. Due to its quickly forming thin oxide layer, aluminium has a silver-grey appearance. This oxide layers make aluminium very resistant against rust and corrosion. In contrast to marble, an aluminium table is easy to look after as liquids such as red wine or coffee can be quickly wiped away and do not penetrate the smooth surface.
A bistro table made from aluminium impresses with its understatement and class. This type of restaurant furniture is particularly well suited for outdoors, as it is absolutely rust free. Even saltwater climates cannot damage these tables. Apart from that, aluminium tables are very light and can be rearranged or put away without too much effort.
